Lake Danao Park in Camotes Island |
|
Camotes consists of four islands namely, Pajican
Island, Poro Island, Ponson Island and Tulang
Island. Pajican and Poro Islands are joined by a
paved road while Ponson Island is separated by the
Camotes Sea and lies about four kilometers northeast
of Poro Island. Tulang Island is located north of
Pajican. There are four minicipalities in the
island, San Francisco, Tudela, Poro and Pilar.
When the Spaniards arrived in the Camotes Islands,
they met natives digging potatoes which are locally
known as camote. When asked about the name of the
place, the natives, thinking they were asked what
they were digging, replied "camotes". Thus, the
island came to be known as Camotes or Potato Island.

area and population. The town used to be called Suangan
because of the abundance of Sawang trees. The town's
name was later chnaged to San Francisco to honor one of
the early settlers whose name was Francisco. One of the
main attractions in San Francisco is Lake Danao which is
shaped like the figure 8 and is the biggest lake in the
Visayas. The lake has won awards as the cleanest inland
body of water in the region.
The Municipality of Poro, meanwhile is a melting pot of
cultures because it is where immigrants from Samar,
mainland Cebu, Bohol and Negros stay. It came to be
called Poro because the local name for this island is
poro or pulo. A must see in Poro is its church which
celebrated its 161st year presently.
The Municipality of Tudela was founded by Don Marinano
Montibon in 1851 and the must see destinations are the
Bukilat Cave and the Magagay-ay Beach. the Municipality
of Pilar, meanwhile, was founded by solferino Borinaga
who hailed from Cabalian, Leyte. The town was named
after the wife of Solferino's son Martin. Martin became
the kapitan of the area and his wife was well-loved by
the people.
