One of
the oldest towns in the southern part of Cebu
Philippines, the
municipality of Boljoon is considered "the only postcard
town of the entire province" because of its beauty. |

The
town of Boljoon is bounded by the municipality of Alcoy
in the north, the municipality of Oslob in the south,
the municipality of Malabuyoc in the west and the Bohol
Strait in the east. Boljoon is an agricultural town
where fishing and farming is the min livelihood of the
people. It is composed of 11 barangays, six of which,
including the poblacion are coastal, while the rest are
upland barangays.
The actual date of the creation of the town is in
dispute, Marin Morales, a local historian, said the town
was created in 1600 and the parish was created a year
after. The Archives of the Augustinian Province of the
Philippines, However said that the parish was formally
established in 1692. During the Spanish times, towns and
parishes are usually synonymous.
One of the must-sees in the town is its church, the
Patrocinio de Maria Church. It is the oldest remaining
original stone church in Cebu that has been relatively
well preserved. The church is a veritable showcase of
old and intricate carvings and bass relief. It is also
pseudo-baroque rococo with a beautifully decorated
interior. It has a main nave and transcript and has 28
pillars which are two meters thich and made of mortar
and lime. The pillars support the walls which are as
thick. A communion rail with ornate silver works was
stolen from the church. The ceiling paintings are said
to be 80 years old, painted by Miguel Villareal, a
native of the town.
In 1899, the National Historical Institute declared the
church a National Historical Landmark and the following
year, the National Museum declared it a National
Cultural Treasure.
