world-renowned Chocolate Hills of Bohol Philippines is
popular because if the hundreds of coned shaped hills
that looks like chocolate in summer. Bohol Chocolate
Hills is one of the popular destination here in the
Philippines. Tourist and visitors who had visited Bohol
and described these Chocolate Hills of Bohol Philippines
as giant mole hills and some say that it is shaped like
women's breasts. Some say that these hills are man made.
The Chocolate Hills of Bohol Philippines is Nature's
expression of beauty, mystery and romance. Chocolate
Hils is one of Philippines natural monument. Bohol
Philippines' Chocolate Hills is also considered as on of
the eight wonder of the world and it has been declared
as the country's 3rd National Geological Monument and
proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage
List.
The number of Chocolate Hills in Bohol consists of not
less than 1268 hills. These Chocolate Hills are uniform
in shape and most of them are about 30 to 50 meters
high. In rainy seasons, these Chocolate Hills are
covered by green grasses and during dry season, these
hills are brown.
There are many stories and legends of how this these
Chocolate Hills come to existence. One of the Legend
said that there are two giants who throw threw stones
and sand at each other in a fight that lasted for days.
The two giants were very exhausted and finally become
friends again. They left the island and left their mess
behind. The mess are these Chocolate Hills. The other
legend is in a more romantic approach. It is a tale of a
young and strong giant named Arogo who fell in love with
an ordinary mortal girl called Aloya. The mortal girl
died and the giant Arogo cried bitterly. His tears then
turned into hills, as a lasting proof of his grief.
There are still many question how these Chocolate Hills
of Bohol where formed. Even geologists have not reached
any concensus until now. The only theory how this
Chocolate are formed is that these Chocolate Hills are
the weathered formations of a kind of marine limestone
on top of a impermeable layer of clay. You can see these
explaination on a bronze plaque when you climb the 214
steps to the top of the observation hill near the
complex.
How To Get There
From Manila, fly to Cebu then catch a connecting flight
to Tagbilaran City, the capital of Bohol. If you prefer
to go straight to the province, Aerolift has direct
flights to Tagbilaran City daily. For a more leisurely
travel, Bohol is also accessible by sea.
Once in Tagbiliran and do not want an organized tour
then head for the bus terminal near the markets. You
need to catch the bus that is going to Carmen. The trip
will take about 2 hours. Don’t forget that you are
heading for the Chocolate Hills Resort and you need to
get off the bus before Carmen where the resort is. Just
ask the driver to drop you off there, you may need to
remind him. |
