Siargao Island Will Hold International Game Fishing Tournament 2009
Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte Philippines is holding an International Game Fishing Tournament on May 7-9, 2009 in the town of Pilar. The beautiful and scenic tropical island of Siargao is now preparing for this three day big event. There are many participants about 100 foreign and local anglers that has aleady committed in the said tournament.
The organizers said that the international participants or foreign anglers that have signed up to this tournament comes from Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Russia, Taiwan, the United States and other Asian countries and are eager to catch the largest bony fish in the open sea off the northeastern tip of the Caraga Region composed of the provinces of Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, and Dinagat Islands.
The International Game Fishing Tournament will again put the Philippines on the world map. This important event will boost the tourism industry in the Philippines and the Siargao Island. It will feature Siargao Island “Cloud Nine” as the world-class surfing destination, the largest mangrove forest plantation in the country with 8,760 hectares, pristine white sand beaches, and tropical marine life-rich coral reefs. Rep. Francisco T. Matugas, the “Father” of the big fishing tourney has said that the tourism is the prime vehicle for development in the island and of the whole province of Surigao del Norte.
There are many project like infrastructure that include roads and airport development are ongoing to make Siargao Island more accessible to both domestic and foreign tourists. With this development, it will boost tourism in Siargao Island.
In the International Game Fishing Tournament 2009, the Department of Tourism (DOT) has said President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is expected to witness the big event. The Officials of the Department of Tourism (DOT) First District of Surigao del Norte also said that the President Macapagal Arroyo will also hand out the prizes to the winners the three-day international tournament.
