Malapascua Island is famous for thresher sharks but is it is also teeming with other underwater life like soft corals and a wide variety of fishes such as pygmy sea horse, mandarin fish, nudibranch, pipefish, frog fish ,cuttle fish, sea horses, sea moths, octopus and gunards among other fishes. Malapascua is known for some of the best shark diving in the Philippines, famous for the thresher sharks, which can be seen at any time of year at Monad Shoal. This is reputedly the only place in the world where these sharks can be seen within recreational diver limits on a regular basis. At other times of the year it is also possible to encounter schooling hammerheads and giant manta rays that also frequent the cleaning stations at Monad Shoal. Gato Island is another famous shark site where it is practically guaranteed that you will see white tip sharks sleeping within the caves and crevasses and if you have a good eye, bamboo sharks nestling in the cracks.
Malapascua Exotic Island Dive & Beach Resort is the first to dive with the thresher sharks in 1997 and the first dive shop in Malapascua to be established. It is the only resort in the island to earn a 5 star from PADI IDC with Nitrox filing station, technical dive facility and only Go Eco dive resort on the island. The dive shop uses 12lt aluminum tanks with INT valve and has only a limited supply of DIN adapters for rent, so divers are advised to notify the resort if they require this service. The average yearly water temperature around Malapascua is 25degrees minimum. Most divers are comfortable in 3mml full suits with a hooded vest for those colder deeper dives. The salinity of the water around Malapascua is not too high, especially in comparison to the Red Sea and Thailand. Over weighted divers are in danger of damaging coral and putting themselves at unnecessary risk. The dive shop offers diving courses from beginner courses to combination courses and instructor development course. Non-diving specialties like Aware coral reef, Marine resource management, Project Aware, Gas blender and DAN oxygen provider are also offered. Other specialty courses are also available.
