The beauty is revealed at night!!
There is a place in the Philippines that magic only happens every night, where the enchantment begins after the sun sets and the beauty is revealed when darkness descends. This is the nightlife in Donsol, Sorsogon where the place is very quiet and all you can hear is the nature. But you will be fascinated that beyond the stillness of the night and darkness, you will see the blinking lights of the fireflies.
Firefly watching along the Ogod and Donsol rivers is no ordinary tourist attraction. The enchanted beauty of these thousands of nocturnal insects inhabit the two rivers and provide glow around the mangrove trees along the banks. It is like christmas lights that these flicker of lights takes the shape of the tree. These marvelous creature are wonders of nature that thousands of them are teeming up to the trees and they are flying, dancing and circling around the branches. You could even see its lights reflecting on the water. These fireflies are common here in the Philippines but is extraordinary is the huge population of these species found along the province’s two rivers.
In Asia, there are only three countries that is offering a firefly tour, and the Philippines is one of them. Since the tour was created, there is a significant increased of tourist that visits this place to see the fireflies. Department of Tourism (DoT) organized a group of bangkeros (boatmen) to take charge of the guided tours in which you have to pay for a minimal boat rental fee. You will be taken to the firefly sanctuary and can see scenic view pf these amazing creatures of the night along the river.
Firefly watching is an important nature-based destination in Donsol, Sorsogon. These is natures gifts to mankind and we must appreciate and take care of it. In this, it has given a totally new meaning to the word “nightlife” in Donsol.
The rivers of Donsol is host to a number of mangrove and mangrove-associated species and freshwater fishes, which is believed to contribute nourishment to planktonic food of whale sharks.
