Daan-Bantayan Cebu Philippines: Cocobana Beach Resort in Malapascua Island

Cocobana Beach Resort opened its doors to the public last December 1992. The name Cocobana was inspired by the four words Corals, Coconuts, Bananas and Cabanas. The location of the resort affords it to boast of fine white sand beach with waters that are teeming with rich marine life that is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. Cocobana Beach Resort is situated in the beautiful island of Malapascua in Barangay Logon, Daan-Bantayan, Cebu.
Cocobana Beach Resort offers its patrons a choice of cottages and deluxe rooms for its accommodations. The cottages are equipped with air-conditioning, electric fans, private toilet and bath with hot and cold shower, refrigerator, satellite TV and a balcony with a fantastic view of the beach. Between the cottages and the deluxe rooms is a verdant flower garden that is a labor of love by the resort personnels.
Aside from enjoying a day with the sun, sea and sand, the resort also offers other activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, beach volleyball, boating, water skiing, billiards and table tennis. The resort also has a floating bar. When the sea is calm and there is a sufficient number of guests on board the floating bar, it will be pulled by bancas to circumnavigate the island. It has become a very popular two-hour trip for the guests and it is always fun. Diving the waters of the island is a unique experience. Popular with divers are wreck dives and the Cave of Gato Island. Especially popular is Shark Point with its famous but rare Thresher and Hammerhead Sharks. At certain times of the year the great Manta Rays can also be encountered there.
A walk around the entire island will take at least three hours. Guests will pass several villages along the way as well as numerous beaches and hills with spectacular views. Visitors can climb up the lighthouse for an even better view. Numerous stores are scattered along the way where guests can buy food and drinks. Guests can also rent an outrigger to tour the island. Guests can choose a nice spot of beach to stop and have a picnic at the beach before returning to the resort.
The resort can be reached by land and by water. Between Maya and Cebu City (from/to your hotel or Mactan Airport) there is now an official Minibus-Service. For reservation please contact, at least one day ahead, the reception desk at Cocobana Beach Resort. Travelling time from Cebu City to Maya nonstop maximum 3 hours. Buses from Cebu City to Maya depart between 5am and 11am. Buses of the companies “Cebu Autobus” and “D’Rough Riders” depart from the northern bus terminal, which is located near the Shoe Mart Shopping Center. The 145 kilometer bus trip takes about 3 hours 30 minutes up to 4 hours. A taxi ride will take approximately 3 hours. From early morning to late afternoon several boats from Maya run directly to Cocobana Beach on Malapascua Island. The boat ride takes about 30 minutes.

NEVER GO THERE!!!
The only positive side of this place is its location on the beach. Note that many other resorts such as Exotic Resort and Hippocampus have the same ideal location.
The staff is hardly friendly, the room looked clean in appearance but we quickly found spider webs, a dead cockroach below the sink and dirty hair in the shower from the previous customers.
I notified the reception about that but it had never been cleaned up.
The aircon is awefully noisy.
It took us 1h30 to get 5 sandwiches from the restaurant of the resort.
And last but not least, if you are still considering going to this place, the first thing you should check in the room is the shower. The room was supposed to be with hot shower but it was cold, and most of all there was no pressure at all.
At some point I was taking my shower with barely a few drops coming out of the shower head, and suddenly the water stopped. With all the soap on me I had to go “borrow” the shower of our friends’ room that had a little bit more pressure. Imagine if I was alone…
Of course I complained at the reception. The girl was very surprised and almost treated me a liar when she said it was the first time she heard something like that and that the previous customers never complained. After endless talking she finally agreed to give me a discount of 200 pesos and she said the staff will check the problem.
The next day the problem was exactly the same! I complained again and she said there was nothing she could do and treated me a liar again.
I told her I would heavily complain about this hotel and its management, writing bad reviews online. She said she didn’t care, and that if I was not happy I could get out and find myself another hotel.
The room we had was an aircon cottage with sea view and the price was 2800 pesos I think.
We went there in August 2009.
Be aware that the resort doesn’t have electricity from 11am to 5pm.
We came back twice to Malapascua after that and went to the Hippocampus Resort and to the Exotic Resort. All in all the best is definitely Exotic Resort.
