The
team from the University of the Philippines College of
Law beat nine other teams from universities across Asia
to bag the title of 2007 Asia Cup International Law Moot
Court Competition champion. The competition was held in
Japan.
The Philippine team was composed of Anna Lorem Ramos,
Janice Lee, Maricel Seno and Anya Palileo. It is the
third time that the UP team won the competition which is
sponsored annually by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of
Japan. The UP team bested the teams from Ateneo and FEU
to earn the privilege of officially representing the
country in Japan.
The competition is a regional moot court that tests the
student's skills in both written and oral pleadings.
"The team’s victory indicate the students’ strong
interest in international law not just for purely
academic reasons but for its practical applications as
well. The conflict in Mindanao, for example, is a
perfect source of application for the law on armed
conflict", said Director of the UP Institute of
International Legal Studies, Harry Roque. The
contestants were tested on their mastery of public
international law, humanitarian law, human rights and
refugee law. The contestants acts as legal counsels
defending before a simulated International Court of
Justice.
The judges in the Asia Cup were Dr. Jean-Marie
Henckaerts of the International Committee of the Red
Cross, Ambassador Chusei Yamada of the United Nations
International Law Commission, Ambassador Tetsuyo Endo of
the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dr. Umesh
Kadam of the ICRC. |
