Following President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's order to
launch humanitarian offensive in the war-torn areas of
Sulu and Basilan, Social Welfare Secretary Esperanza
Cabral flew to the area to formally start the project.
The humanitarian offensive will be implemented by the
Department of Energy, Department of Education and the
Department of Social Welfare and Development.
As part of the project, the DSWD distributed tents, food
packs as well as clothing packs in Basilan and Sulu.
They will also be establishing solar-powered science
laboratories for students in the hinterlands of Sulu and
Basilan as one of the outcome of the military offensive
operation is the disruption of classes in the affected
areas.
Meanwhile, the President arrived in Isabela City,
Basilan to boost the morale of the soldiers. The
President thanked the troops for continuing to fight
terrorism. Amid a tight security, the President joined
the troops in a "boodle fight" which is a traditional
meal shared using the bare hands in eating local fares
served over mounds of rice on banana leaves. President
Arroyo also shake hands with the soldiers and talked to
them.
Armed Forces Chief Hermogenes Esperon Jr. said that the
soldiers combat pay will be raised as it has not been
increased since the 1980's. Esperon also thanked the
President's undying support and promised to fortify the
troops resolve in carrying their duties. |
