The
military has ordered a total news blackout and food
blockade in Basilan as military preparations for an
all-out offensive against members of Moro Islamic
Liberation Front involved in the ambush and mutilation
of 14 marines last July 10.
The announcement was made by chief of Task Force
Thunder, Brig. Gen. Juancho Sabban, last Sunday during a
press conference. Tactical troop movements are being
finalized and are to be used once the operation will
begin against the rebels.
Arriving last Saturday is a strong five- ballation force
of the Marines assigned for the military offensive
operations dubbed as "Oplan Katarungan". They were
reminded by Brig. Gen. Sabban to "win the hearts and
minds of the people" in order to attain peace in the
province. "We will also give justice to those who
sacrifice their lives," Saban added further.
Joining the Marines for Oplan Katarungan are a battalion
from the Philippine Army, one Scout Ranger Company and
intelligence units from the Philippine Navy’s Special
Warfare Group.
A food blockade was ordered in the island where MILF
rebels were reported to have been hiding. |
