Proponents of Trees for Life project aims to plant 20
million trees by November of this year. This was
revealed during its launching program yesterday. A joint
project with the Department of Environment and Natural
Resources and the Green Army Foundation Inc., their goal
is to recover and preserve some of our country's forest
which has significantly lessened through the years.
The initiation of the Trees for Life project aims to
convey to the Filipino people of the importance and
immediate need to protect and to rebuild our natural
habitats which has been severely destructed.
The project is already gaining on its efforts thanks
largely to people-oriented forestry projects and
adoption of community-based forest management. In spite
of this, Environment Secretary Angelo Reyes reveals that
they still have a long way towards their goal. Hand in
hand with Green Army Foundation, a multisectoral
coalition of environmental, civil society, religious,
youth and business groups, and academics, they are
aiming to raise 20 million saplings of indigenous trees
to be planted in denuded forests, watersheds, public
parks and along national highways.
A continuation of Green Philippine Highways's project,
Green Army Foundation together with Mirant Foundation
planted 800,000 trees along 4,181 kilometers of roads
last year. With the simultaneous planting of 800,000
trees, the project set a new Guinness World Record of
the "Most Trees Planted Simultaneously". |
