After
implementing the radio and television advertisement ban
in January of this year, the billboards are next in
line. Target date of the removal of cinema and outdoor
ads, leaflets and posters for tobacco products will be
July 2007. Only print advertisements and posters in
stores actually selling tobacco products would be
allowed but this will be only up to July 8, 2008 when
the entire law intended to phase out tobacco
advertising, will be strictly enforced.
Stiff fines will be given and up to a year of
imprisonment will be imposed for those who will continue
to defy the law.
The bright side that is brought about by the
implementation of the law is the going down of the
number of young Filipino smokers. The number
significantly decreased to 21.8 percent in 2005 as
compared to the 32.6 percent in 2000. This was revealed
by Dr. Lenora Caņizares Fernandez of the University of
the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital. Fernandez
also added that massive information dissemination on the
harmful effects of smoking helped in the decrease of
young Filipino smokers.
Local government units are also encouraged to aid in the
implementation by attaining a smoke-free environment by
enforcing the local ordinances. |
