Philippine News: RP Congress to celebrate centennial celebration

The Philippine Congress will celebrate its centennial celebration on June 7, 2007. In attendance during the celebration will be President Arroyo together with the country's top officials and several foreign dignitaries. The launching of the celebration will begin with a centennial plenary session to be attended by the 236-member lower legislative chamber.

Mrs. Arroyo and Vice President Noli de Castro,Senate President Manuel Villar, Chief Justice Reynato Puno and visiting Speakers of Parliament from other parts of the world are to speak at the special plenary session. Making the response speech will be the longest-serving Speaker of the House, Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. His speech will contain the legislature’s record in leading the nation towards independence, social and political stability, peace, prosperity and economic growth. Crucial events will come first before the special session like the unveiling of a historical marker, the launching of a centennial history book titled Assembly of the Nation, and the opening of a photo exhibit.

The House of Representatives marks its history to the Philippines's first elective national legislature put in order some time in 1907 under American colonial rule. The assembly was composed of 80 members known as the Asamblea Filipina with Sergio Osmeña serving as the very first Speaker. After the declaration of independence in 1946, the House lead in the efforts to restructure the country's political, economic and social structures towards stability and prosperity.

The debut of the House centennial celebration corresponds with the end of the 13th Congress. The House is presently represented by 236 members from 212 legislative districts and 16 party-list organizations.
