The "Kayang-kaya
ko Magpinta" art exhibit was launched yesterday at the
Metropolitan Museum’s White Cube Gallery. The painting
that were on display are works of young artists with
disabilities.
Alma Quinto, art educator and visual artist, said many
children with disabilities have difficulty communicating
their feelings to people, but art has helped them
express themselves without the need to say a word. "
People commonly see them as different because of their
disability but through this exhibit we want to prove
that they are capable of doing things other children do
if given the opportunity," Quinto added further.
The ten disabled artist trained with Quinto for three
weeks prior to the exhibit. They were taught how to
paint and express their strength and creativity through
arts. Although the children are first-time painters,
they showed great potential of becoming professional
artists in the future if given proper training.
Octavio Gonzales of the Philippine Association for
Citizens with Developmental and Learning Disabilities
revealed that the ten children were selected from
various poor communities and trained with financial
support coming from the National Commission for Culture
and the Arts. "Our organization serves as the support
system to parents of children with disabilities and
inspires them to develop the potential in their
children," Gonzales said.
Clearly, language was not a barrier for these children
to express how beautiful life is for them. |
